JANET SEIDEL TRIO – FAR AWAY PLACES AT MRC BY JANET WALKER
Listen up, all you romantics reports Janet Walker our Super Sleuth for Spotlight Stories.

On September 28th The Janet Seidel Trio will present two concerts (3.00 pm and 7.30pm) at the Melbourne Recital Centre (MRC). The trio will perform in the MRC Salon, a venue uniquely suited to Janet’s intimate vocal style and piano, complimented by the rich acoustic sound of Chuck Morgan’s guitar, ukuleles and David Seidel’s bass.

The Sydney based jazz trio have chosen the MRC gig to launch their latest CD, Far Away Places; tracks include: Far Away Places, La Paloma, Midnight Sun, Moon River, Golden Slumbers, Sand in My shoes, La Javanaise, If You Go Away, Historia de un Amor, Recado Bossa Nova, Kiss of Fire and many more.

The CD of vintage and retro songs takes advantage of the Trio’s ability to take the listener on a romantic journey… the moon on high, palm trees sway in a soft breeze, a night made for romance, Janet’s vocals, Chuck and David’s accompaniment, fresh and about as close to sublime as you can get.

Yup, you’ve guessed it; I’m a big fan of The Janet Seidel Trio. Janet’s personalised vocals and the guys’ musical interpretations raise songs that are mostly ‘old standards’ to a new level of swinging enjoyment, evoking a response that ranges from the emotions of boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl through to the toe-tapping rhythms of boy-finds-girl and a good time is had by all.

The Janet Seidel Trio tours in the UK, Ireland, Europe and Japan. Since 2011, they have featured several times in cabaret or jazz trio mode at the MRC Salon – the shows… all sell outs.

During a break in her busy schedule, I caught up with Janet, the lady who has been described as ‘Australia’s first lady of Jazz’, and asked these questions:

When you perform in Melbourne do you and the guys have a favourite place to hang out?

Hanging out! Consulting with my boys, we love having a meal in Chinatown after the gig or going Greek, Lygon Street eateries are also a favourite.

When we did the Melbourne Ukulele Festival in March this year, we discovered the joys of late night dining just down the road from the Northcote Town Hall – great food.

Jazz in Sydney music venues, pretty limited, if time permits, visiting the great pubs and clubs in Melbourne, which feature live jazz is just so enjoyable.

The trio travels interstate and overseas to perform – how hard is it to keep bad hair days at bay?

“Bad Hair days! After all the years I’ve spent living out of a suitcase, hair can be a challenge.

I have a minimalist kit of travel curlers, straighteners (work that one out!) plus my exclusive range of Shiseido hair care products (I’ve warbled on a few Shiseido commercials in Japan!).

The biggest challenge is keeping fit and healthy on road tours and sorting out a drop-dead glamorous wardrobe that can be packed into a carry-on size bag”.

After the MRC concerts what’s upcoming for you, Chuck and David?

“Upcoming concerts and tours for the trio – we’re building up to a big Japanese tour in October.

Our first tour of Japan was in 1999 for the Kobe Jazz Festival and I can’t wait to get back.

We have many fans and friends in Japan.

The tours are always run like clockwork with first class tickets on the bullet train, attention to detail for all the sound checks, and with delicious Japanese banquets after every concert, yes, it is possible to put on weight in Japan!

Plus we have several Australian tours in 2014 (we’ll be coming back to Melbourne) and we hope to tour again in the UK”

Spring, romance and The Janet Seidel Trio; a winning combination, the MRC Salon will be setup in cabaret mode for the concerts.

RECORD LABEL: Antipodes
FORMAT: CD

Janet's new CD is the follow up to her very successful CD Moon Of Manakoora, which topped the jazz vocal charts in Japan and won the Bell Award for Best jazz vocal CD in Australia 2006. Featuring trio members with guest Australian jazz greats and Chuck Morgan in particular as arranger and guitarist plus glimpses of his unique approach to ukulele, the resulting sound glimmers with good vibes and perfectly frames Janet's intimate vocal style. The notion of musical wanderlust was always a romantic one and possibly never more so than in early stages of the age of international travel, when the image of an exotic location, a bongo and a ukulele became a symbol of blissful escape to another time and place. Realising a fresh sound within a retro style, the repertoire takes in a mix of vintage songs, old school world music, and songs that dreamily transport the listener to another headspace.

Far Away Places (Janet Seidel Trio & Friends)
JAZZ: JOHN MCBEATHTheAustralian12:00AM November 9, 2013

THE 18th album from award-winning Sydney pianist and vocalist Janet Seidel is billed as a fresh sound within an accessible retro style, in a mix of vintage songs from around the world.
Certainly these 15 songs are culled from many decades. The earliest, La Paloma, originated in 1863 but has new lyrics here by Seidel.

That time-worn longevity may be one of the problems for the collection; some songs have been recorded 100 times and many have been imbued with deeper and more original vocal expression. There are several fine musicians here including Hamish Stuart on drums, percussionist Fabian Hevia, Paul Furniss on clarinet and Chuck Morgan playing a variety of guitars and ukulele.

Seidel sings each note perfectly with correct phrasing, but strong expression is missing. In a tonal quality reminiscent of Doris Day, she sings the title song -- a hit from 1948 recorded by Margaret Whiting, Dinah Shore, Jo Stafford and others -- to an exotic-sounding backdrop established by Morgan's guitar and ukulele, but she doesn't explore the song's emotional possibilities.

The most jazz-flavoured track, the Ellington theme Take the A Train, features vocalese choruses and a surprisingly good ukulele solo. The album closes with the Beatles' 1969 piece Golden Slumbers presented as an unornamented lullaby.

These songs will be a nostalgia trip for many, but they would have been more effective if greater attention had been given to supplying distinctive vocal expression.

Far Away Places is the latest in Janet Seidel’s long discography, spanning over eighteen releases so far. The album pulls together a wide collection of songs form all across the world, including Cuba (La Paloma), Japan (Suzukake no Michi), and America (Take The A Train). Every track on this album is realised in a similar stripped down, soulful iteration. Seidel is surrounded by a host of talented musicians here. Aside from the trio regulars Chuck Morgan and David Seidel, Fabian Hevla and Hamish Stuart both contribute some solid percussion work across half the tracks. ~Sam Gilles
